Sad but exciting times

It’s been a sad time at Biggin Hill recently and for General Aviation with all flying schools being served 6 months notice to vacate the airfield.

Although it is not a massive surprise, I am particularly attached to Alouette’s Cessna 172, as this was the aircraft I completed nearly all of my training and passed my skills test in.

Things have not been looking good at Biggin Hill for a while. First runway 29/11 (the short runway) was closed and ended up becoming a parking lot for bigger business jets. On one particular flight late on a Sunday afternoon, I was requested to orbit on the downwind leg of the circuit on my approach to land. This ended up being 19 circles around the New Addington area.

The airport then introduced an online PPR system that made booking out and departing a little bit more difficult. Then there was a total ban on all circuit training at the airfield with suggestions to visit nearby Redhill instead.

So with the rising costs mostly imposed by the airport management and their comments around the safety of General Aviation conflicting with their business jet operations, notice was served. This has meant I have had to say goodbye to G-BRAK the Cessna 172 and G-BUJO the PA28 and look for other options in order to keep flying.

I started to contact a number of flying clubs at Rochester, Headcorn and Lydd and after reviewing all of the options decided to join Weald Aviation Services based at Headcorn in Kent. Not only are they a lot closer to home, they have a larger although slightly older aircraft fleet.

The club own 2 Cessna 172 aircraft that I was initially checked out on G-ATWJ and G-AVIS. There was a slight delay in getting this check out completed as we had a rather nasty snow storm in Kent that meant the single grass runway was not operational for a couple of days.

So it is sad and an end of an era for my time at Alouette and Biggin Hill but I am extremely excited to have joined a new club at a new airfield.
