My best flight yet!! Flying with my 4 year old daughter

Over the last couple of years my daughter has often seen me leaving the house with my flying bag on my way to the airport. I always make a point of saying good bye at the door and let my kids know that I will be back to see them later in the day. Nearly every time my daughter says “Daddy, can I come with you”. Then when I return home she asks “Daddy, can I come with you next time” or “When can I come with you”. I’ve began to sound like a broken record and tell her “maybe when you are a bit older”.

Since a flight when she was a lot younger and supervised in the back of the plane, my wife and I have had a rule that in the unlikely event that there should be an emergency, she can evacuate the aircraft on her own.

She has been itching for some time now to join her Dad and sit in the co-pilots seat. Now that she is a confident 4 year old and had demonstrated that she can exit the aircraft unaided, I agreed for the 2 of us to fly together. In all honesty, this is a flight that I was equally excited about.

G-BNYL Cessna 152

So on bank holiday Monday, 6th May, I booked out the Cessna 152 G-BNYL for the 2 of us for probably the shortest flight I have ever done but wanted to make sure that she was comfortable setting in the front seat next to me and we were not too far away if we needed to make a quick return to the airport.

My wife and son came to Headcorn with us and watched from the field that runs parallel to the runway. She kept my daughter entertained while I completed all of the pre-flight checks and fuelled the plane. I then taxied the plane back to the parking bay and went to collect a very excited but slightly nervous 4 year old.

We departed from runway 28 from Headcorn and our first stop was to find our house near Maidstone in Kent. While making a few orbits she managed to spot our house. Just a few seconds up the road and she then spotted her school.

We then made a turn towards the east and headed towards Leeds Castle, this venue is somewhere that we have visited as a family and with friends numerous times and one of my daughters favourite days out. The direction we approached Leeds Castle meant it was visible out of my window on the left but it didn’t take her long to find it as we banked around the castle.

With my wife and son waiting back at Headcorn and not wanting to push my daughter too far, we then made a turn back to Headcorn and called them on the radio for airfield information to re-join the circuit.

We joined crosswind for runway 28 avoiding Headcorn Village due to the noise abatement procedures. During our short descent and on final approach we hit some rather unpleasant turbulence which although was uncomfortable for her she coped with it really well.

We landed on runway 28, taxied back to our parking bay, shut down the aircraft and my daughter was full of excitement and couldn’t wait to get back to my wife to tell her all about it. She was full of it for the next couple of days after too.

I must admit, I was a little bit nervous in the days leading up to the flight. Not only because I was carrying precious cargo but also hoping she would be ok and enjoy it, but I needn’t have worried. She was an absolute angel and absolutely loved it and now can’t wait to fly again but next time she wants to go a little bit further. So although this was probably the shortest flight I have ever done, it was, without a doubt my best yet – a very proud Dad!!
