Gusty coastal departure

Lydd to Headcorn

So this is my last video and post of 2019 and it is of my return trip back to Headcorn with my father in law after a short stop at the cafe at Lydd airport.

After the challenging approach and landing with the strong winds on our inbound flight, I didn’t want to hang around too long. The conditions showed no signs of helping us out either. As I checked over the aircraft I could most definitely feel the gusts and at some points felt that the poor little Cessna 152 might start to moving on it’s own before I had got into the P1 seat.

I started the engine and while doing the internal checks I tried to keep the control column ‘under control’ as the gusts hit the ailerons and elevators.

With all checks complete and an identical route to our first leg (just in reverse) planned back to Headcorn. We got our clearance to taxi and headed towards runway 21.

The airfield was very quiet and we were given our clearance to take off while still taxiing towards the Alpha holding point. We lined up in the runway, pointed the ailerons into wind, applied full power and we were airborne in no time at all.

Our route took us towards Tenterden and on approaching the town we requested a frequency change to Headcorn Radio to get the airfield information for our approach and landing.

Runway 28 was still in use and we joined the circuit on the left hand downwind leg. We then heard on the radio that the wind conditions at Headcorn had also picked up and had actually changed direction while we were in the circuit. This meant that we were landing almost with a tailwind. Given the circumstances and conditions the touch down was pretty smooth and was prepared for the slightly longer stopping distance.

We vacated the runway, parked up the Cessna 152 G-YL which had performed really well considering the battering that it had taken.

The whole reason I wanted to make this flight was for the practice and I got a lot more than I bargained for. Initially it was just for the procedures at an aerodrome with full ATC, but with the wind conditions I managed to get some good practice there too.

This video was filmed a while back and since then have only really been flying to keep current and getting some practice in the Robin aircraft with my instructor. I have a lot more planned for 2020, but until then, merry Christmas and a happy new year!
