VMC to IMC close call, Transponder issue and delays in the circuit
On Sunday 19th February 2017, I had a land away planned to Earls Colne in Essex with my parents in Alouette’s Piper Warrior PA28.
When I arrived at Biggin Hill the VFR conditions were marginal and the cloud base at Earls Colne was even worse. After doing the pre-flight checks on the PA28, I decided that the land away wasn’t going to happen as I was concerned that I would get stuck in Essex if the weather closed in even more.
Luckily, by the time I had refuelled the aircraft and completed all the necessary paperwork, the conditions at Biggin had improved so we decided on a local flight to the north east in the direction of Earls Colne and ‘see how far we got’.
The answer was, just short of Chelmsford. The cloud base has been reasonably consistent throughout the flight at just above 2,000 feet until we passed over Brentwood. The cloud ahead was looking quick thick, but out of nowhere it just hit us. I made the decision to instantly make a 180 degree turn and head back to Biggin Hill.
It was then that Southend Radar informed me that my transponder was transmitting an incorrect squawk which couldn’t be rectified after resetting a couple of times.

While flying at 2,000 feet a bird decided to ‘do it’s business’ on the port side window and to top it all off we spent nearly as long orbiting in the circuit at Biggin Hill than we did en-route (lots of IFR inbound jets on the ILS).
All in all, quite an eventful flight.
